UAE Dependent Visa Cancellation: Order, Fees & Process (2026)
Last updated: April 2026
If you sponsor dependents in the UAE — a spouse, children, or other family members — their visas need to be cancelled in the correct order before your own. Getting this wrong can block your entire process and lead to unnecessary fines. This guide walks you through the exact sequence, fees, and documents you need.
Why Order Matters: Dependents Before Sponsor
The UAE immigration system enforces a strict hierarchy: all dependent visas must be cancelled before the sponsor's visa can be processed. This is not a suggestion or a best practice — it is a hard requirement built into the systems at both GDRFA (General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, which handles Dubai) and ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, which handles all other emirates).
If you attempt to cancel or let your own visa lapse while dependents are still active on your sponsorship, the system will reject the request. Worse, if your visa expires while dependents remain active, those dependents can accumulate overstay fines — currently AED 50 per day after the grace period — under your sponsorship liability.
The correct sequence is always: cancel all dependent visas first, confirm each cancellation is fully processed, then proceed with your own visa cancellation. Plan for this to take 1–2 weeks per dependent depending on processing times and whether the dependent is inside or outside the UAE.
Who Counts as a Dependent
Under UAE immigration law, the following family members can be sponsored as dependents on a residence visa:
- Spouse — Husband or wife on a dependent/family visa. Note that if your spouse holds their own employment visa (sponsored by their employer), they are not your dependent for visa purposes and do not need to be cancelled through your sponsorship.
- Sons — Can remain on a parent's visa until age 25 (previously 18, updated under recent federal regulations). Sons over 25 must hold their own visa.
- Daughters — Can remain on a parent's visa until married, regardless of age.
- Parents — First-degree relatives (parents) can be sponsored with a refundable deposit of AED 1,020 per person. This deposit is held for a maximum of 60 days after visa cancellation before being refunded.
- Other relatives — In some cases, siblings or other family members may be sponsored. The same cancellation-before-sponsor rule applies.
Each dependent with an active visa under your sponsorship must be individually cancelled. There is no batch cancellation — each person requires a separate application and fee payment.
The Amer Centre Route vs GDRFA/ICP App Route
There are two main ways to process a dependent visa cancellation, depending on which emirate issued the visa:
Dubai: GDRFA via Amer Centres
In Dubai, dependent visa cancellations are handled by GDRFA and processed through Amer service centres. Amer centres are the primary in-person touchpoint — you submit your documents, pay the fees, and receive confirmation through these centres. You can also initiate the process through the GDRFA mobile app or the GDRFA website, though most people find the Amer centre route more straightforward for dependent cancellations.
Processing time at Amer centres is typically 2–5 business days. During peak periods or if additional verification is needed, it can take up to 10 business days.
Other Emirates: ICP
For visas issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, or Fujairah, the process goes through ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security). You can apply online through the ICP portal or visit an ICP service centre in person. The online route is generally faster and avoids queuing.
Regardless of which route you use, make sure you receive written confirmation (a cancellation receipt or status update in the app) before proceeding with the next dependent or your own visa.
Fees Per Dependent
Visa cancellation fees are charged per person. If you have a spouse and two children on your visa, you will pay the fee three times. Here are the current rates for Dubai:
| Scenario | Fee |
|---|---|
| Dependent inside UAE (standard) | AED 190 + Amer fees |
| Dependent outside UAE | AED 290 + Amer fees |
| First-degree relative deposit (refundable) | AED 1,020 |
| Emirates ID cancellation | Free (automatic) |
Amer service fees vary by centre and service type but typically add AED 50–100 per transaction. Fees in other emirates via ICP may differ slightly. Source: GDRFA, Bayut.
Example: A family of four (sponsor + spouse + 2 children) where all dependents are inside the UAE would pay approximately AED 570 in base government fees (3 x AED 190), plus Amer service fees. If one child is studying abroad, that child's cancellation would cost AED 290 instead, bringing the total to around AED 670 in base fees.
Documents Needed
Gather the following documents for each dependent before visiting the Amer centre or submitting online through ICP:
- Sponsor's passport — Original and copy
- Sponsor's Emirates ID — Original
- Dependent's passport — Original and copy (if dependent is inside UAE). Copy only if dependent is outside the country.
- Dependent's Emirates ID — Original (if available). The Emirates ID is cancelled automatically and free of charge as part of the visa cancellation process.
- Dependent's visa page — Copy of the residence visa stamp or e-visa
- Typed cancellation application — Available at Amer centres or through typing centres near GDRFA/ICP offices
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) — From the sponsor's employer, if the sponsor is on an employment visa (some centres require this)
If you are cancelling a parent's visa, you will also need documentation related to the AED 1,020 deposit — specifically the original deposit receipt — to initiate the refund process. The deposit refund is processed within a maximum of 60 days after cancellation.
Grace Period for Dependents
Once a dependent visa is cancelled, the dependent receives a grace period to remain legally in the UAE. The grace period for dependents matches the sponsor's visa category:
- 30 days — Standard employment visa dependents
- 60 days — Certain visa categories (check your specific visa terms)
- 180 days — Golden Visa holders and their dependents
During the grace period, the dependent can remain in the UAE, complete any remaining administrative tasks, and arrange travel. After the grace period expires, overstay fines of AED 50 per day begin accumulating. It is essential to track grace period end dates carefully, especially when managing multiple dependents with potentially different cancellation dates.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Starting with the sponsor's visa first. This is the single most common mistake. Always cancel dependents first. If your employer initiates your own visa cancellation, communicate clearly that you need time to process dependent cancellations beforehand.
- Forgetting a dependent. Check your GDRFA or ICP account to see all active dependents under your sponsorship. Sometimes a parent or sibling sponsored years ago can be overlooked.
- Not collecting documents in advance. Missing a passport copy or Emirates ID at the service centre means another visit. Prepare all documents for all dependents before your first appointment.
- Ignoring school withdrawal timelines. If you have children in school, coordinate the school withdrawal process alongside visa cancellation. Schools typically require one term's notice. Starting both processes in parallel saves weeks. See our KHDA School Withdrawal Guide for details.
- Assuming the spouse's employer handles it. If your spouse is on your dependent visa (not their own employment visa), the cancellation is your responsibility as the sponsor. A spouse's employment permit (labour card) is separate from their residence visa sponsorship.
- Letting grace periods overlap with your own timeline. If you cancel all dependents on different days, each starts their own grace period clock. Map out every date to ensure no one overstays.
What Happens If You Cancel Out of Order
If you attempt to cancel your own visa while dependents are still active, the system will simply reject the application. This is the best-case scenario — it forces you to go back and cancel dependents first, but it costs you time.
The worse scenario is when a sponsor's visa expires or is cancelled by an employer before dependents are handled. In this case:
- Dependents may begin accumulating overstay fines once their linked grace period ends
- The sponsor may face immigration holds preventing them from completing their own process until dependent situations are resolved
- Re-entering the UAE to resolve dependent visa issues adds travel costs and complexity
- In extreme cases, unresolved dependent visas can result in fines accumulating to thousands of dirhams — AED 50/day adds up to AED 1,500/month per person
The bottom line: always handle dependent visas first. If your employer is managing your visa cancellation, make sure they understand you need adequate lead time. Most employers will accommodate a 2–4 week window for dependent processing when asked in advance.
